Arabian Horse
Arabian Horse is one of the oldest breeds, naturally originating in Saudi Arabia, which has also been used to create or improve other breeds from all over the world, first of all the English Thoroughbred.
The thoroughbred Arabian horse is the result of centuries and centuries of selection and use in climatic conditions so difficult as to allow survival only for the most resistant and courageous subjects.
To this must be added that the breeding criterion of the Bedouin tribes has always been to use the subjects endowed with the maximum speed and able to withstand long marches that often ended in war actions where speed and daring were the difference between living and dying.
When the Europeans tried to improve their breeds they started importing stallions from Arabia to cross them with this splendid breed.
The origin
The origin of the Arabian horse dates back to 3000 BC but, as early as the 6th century AD, the Bedouins practiced selective breeding according to criteria still valid today and, since the tribes were numerous and each selected their horses with different criteria, seven different types originated, which were reduced to three today.
The three types
- The Arabic Bebuino (assil) is the original type which is divided into three subtypes:
- Kuhailan, resistant and powerful
- Siglavy, beautiful and elegant
- Muniqi, light and very fast.
- The Arabian of Pure Breed who is the descendant of the three types just mentioned crossed with each other, is the horse that we know as Arab, spread all over the world.
- The Arabian Breed comprising the specimens of Eastern blood which, while respecting the Arab type in terms of morphology and character, have in their genealogical tree relatives with the Berber, the Persian Arabic and the Syrian.
There is no thoroughbred on the tracks all over the world in whose veins at least 85% -95% of blood of the Arabian Horse does not flow and we can say that today there is no equine breed of level where the improving imprint of the Horse is not present Arabic.
In fact, the influence of the Arabian horse is still evident in the breeds of Southern Italy (Persano and eastern derivatives in Sicily) and in the Sardinian breeds.
Arabian Horse is fast, loyal and courageous and, if in the past it was the ideal horse for the army, today it is highly appreciated and used in endurance competitions, for trekking and is also used as a quick shot.
A short history of the Arabian Horse
The British developed thoroughbreds by making extensive use of famous stallions such as Byerly Turk, Darley Arabian, Godolphin Arabian.
Other countries like Hungary, Poland, France, Germany, Spain wanted to improve their breeds with Arab stallions from the deserts.
From Messenger, an Arab derivative, the American Trotter Horse originates.
In the Lipizzaner breed the important Siglawi line descends from a famous Arab stallion called, in fact, Siglawi.
A great interest has focused on the Arabian horse for over two centuries; always, however, more intended for the improvement of indigenous breeds than for the breeding of pure Arabic.
The characteristics of the Arabian horse
The Arabian horse differs from other breeds in constitution and temperament, because it is compact in conformation and known for its resistance.
In fact in cross-country races it has no rivals thanks to its particular metabolism.
The Arabian horse is also famous for its wonderful availability, temperament and goodness, style and beauty associated with ease of learning.
Even stallions do not present particular difficulties and can generally be mounted safely even by children.
Versatility is another formidable characteristic of the breed.
Some selected subjects can run as fast as an English thoroughbred, trot at the most marked gaits such as a Hakney or a Saddle bred, they can work cattle like a Quarter Horse, hunt and jump like a Hunter, serve as a parade horse or elegantly pull a buggy, a carriage or a sled.
To conclude, the Arabian Horse is truly an all-purpose horse.
