Horseback Riding on the Argentario. First let’s get to know the Argentario

Monte Argentario is now a promontory in the Tyrrhenian Sea but was born as an island and the action of the Albegna river and the sea currents have created two tomboli, the Tombolo della Feniglia and the Tombolo della Giannella, which united the island to the mainland creating the Orbetello Lagoon.

Monte Argentario is a hilly area, which has the highest peak in Punta Telegrafo with its 635 meters, an area that is sometimes inaccessible where man has created large terraces for the cultivation of vines and olive trees.

The coast is very indented with coves and even stony beaches, beautiful from a naturalistic point of view and is part of the Cetacean Sanctuary established in 1991 as a protected marine natural area of international interest.

Some islets are also part of the municipal territory, the Islet of Porto Ercole, the Isola Rossa and the Isola Argentarola.

Horseback Riding on the Argentario. Porto Ercole

Porto Ercole is a fraction of the Municipality of Porto Santo Stefano and you cannot leave the Argentario without having visited it because it is one of the most elegant places in Italy which, since 2014, is part of the most beautiful villages in Italy and is called the promontory VIPs for the many famous people who populate it, especially in summer.

Porto Ercole, a kind of island embraced by the land where the crystalline sea merges with the towns, is the real flagship of the Maremma and is located on the eastern side of the Argentario Promontory.

We know Porto Ercole, whose history begins in the Etruscan era, then conquered by the Romans and we have news of it even in medieval times.

In fact, in the year 1296 Margherita Aldobrandeschi, Countess of Sovana, had a square tower built called Torre di Terra, the first nucleus of what will be the Rocca di Porto Ercole.

In the 15th century the port was bought by the powerful Republic of Siena, which contributed to its development.

Subsequently Porto Ercole was the scene of an important battle, or “the Presa di Porto Ercole”, depicted by Vasari in the Sala dei Cinquecento in Palazzo Vecchio.

With the defeat of Siena and France, the Port was annexed to the new State of the Royal Presidia of Spain.

Napoleon dissolved the States of the Royal Presidia of Spain and the city had a slow decline but was reborn as a tourist destination thanks to the visit of Queen Juliana of Holland.

Today it is a high-level tourist destination that offers the visitor the four forts, especially the Forte Stella, with its characteristic plant in the shape of a six-pointed star, and the churches of Sant’Erasmo and San Rocco.

The great Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio, ended his days in Porto Ercole.

And here are some of the monuments to visit

Arriving in Porto Ercole from the main road you will find the sixteenth-century Forte Filippo, the contemporary Torre del Mulinaccio and the eighteenth-century Forte Santa Caterina.

Forte Filippo

Entering the historic core of the city from a Gothic door surmounted by a bertesca, with the Clock Tower, from the walls erected by the Sienese in the second half of the fifteenth century, you can admire the Palazzo dei Governanti in Piazza di Santa Barbara from where it dominates the port and, along a series of narrow alleys, you go up to the oldest part of Porto Ercole and reach the Church of Sant’Erasmo.

The city is dominated by the mighty fortress, which can be reached by deviating from the panoramic road and, at the north-eastern corner, stands the nineteenth-century Porto Ercole lighthouse.

Continuing the walk along the panoramic road you will meet the descent towards the Spiaggia delle Visite, in front of the islet, and you will arrive at the Sbarcatello, dominated by the imposing bulk of the sixteenth-century Forte Stella, a mighty six-pointed fortification that, in the past, it had the function of sighting and from where you can admire an extraordinary panorama.

The Sbarcatello

The events of Porto Ercole

is the historical re-enactment of the battle of 12 June 1544 when the pirate Barbarossa, with the entire Ottoman fleet and some French galleys, devastated the city .

Whoever wants to participate in this re-enactment, but only if dressed as a pirate. In the “Night of the Pirates” there is also a unique treasure hunt at night, which can only be participated with teams of ten people, called “crews”.

Since 1978, between the first and third week of June, the Palio has been held, a rowing regatta inside the port with gozzo boats with four rowers with coxswain between the districts surrounding Porto Ercole (Forte Filippo, la Rocca, Forte Santa Caterina, Forte Stella).

Finally, in the months of July and August, you can attend Concerts in Monte Argentario (CIMA) a music festival founded by the baritone Jorge Chaminè and co-chaired by Princess Cristina
