The Palio di Siena
The Palio di Siena is one of the most famous events in the world loved and followed not only by those who, like us, love horses.
With the Palio di Siena we also want to briefly introduce you to the city that has always hosted it: Siena, one of the most elegant and historic Italian cities linked to the horse and the emotions it arouses.

Piazza del Campo
The Palio di Siena
The Palio di Siena takes place in Piazza del Campo, the central square with the characteristic fan shape, where the seat of the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia are located, a beautiful and thin 14th century tower from which you can enjoy a wonderful view on the seventeen historic districts of the city.
The Palio di Siena, which takes place on 2 July and 16 August of each year, is a race between horses mounted without saddle between the different districts (each district has its own horse) that monopolizes the attention on the city for several days.
This is because the Palio di Siena is not just a historical event or the reinterpretation of an ancient medieval joust, but it is the expression of the ancient and deeply rooted Sienese tradition.
The Palio di Siena is not an event that can be accomplished in a few days but is the result of an accurate and maniacal organization by the districts of the city, which lead an intense social and associative life throughout the year.

The seventeen neighborhoods
In Siena there are seventeen districts (Aquila, Bruco, Chiocciola, Civetta, Drago, Giraffa, Istrice, Leocorno, Lupa, Nicchio, Oca, Onda, Pantera, Selva, Tartuca, Torre and Valdimontone) but only ten of these can participate in the Palio and let’s see why.

At each race, the seven districts that did not participate in the previous year’s race will run and three of the ten districts that had already run a year before will be drawn by lot so that the districts that can take part in the event are always ten.
The draws take place about a month before the prize and the draw for the August Palio usually takes place on the Sunday following the July Palio.

The Palio di Siena and the well-being of horses
There is a strong controversy from animal welfare associations who consider competition to be extremely risky for the life of horses and, also due to public pressure, in recent years the Municipality has multiplied its efforts to ensure a high level of safety and veterinary support.
